Tony Todd dies at 69

Veteran actor Tony Todd, known for his roles in Candyman and the Final Destination series, has passed away at 69. Born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C. Todd trained at the Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute and Trinity Rep Conservatory. His representative confirmed he died at home in Marina del Rey on Wednesday, though the cause has not been disclosed. He leaves behind his wife, Fatima, and two children, Alex and Ariana.

Rel Dowdell, Hampton University’s Director of Film Studies, shared warm memories of working with Tony Todd on Changing the Game (2012). Dowdell described Todd as “a masterful actor, incredibly versatile, and meticulous in his preparation for every role. He was truly one of a kind.”

Todd’s career began with early roles, such as a heroin-addicted sergeant in the Vietnam War film Platoon. He became widely recognized for his portrayal of the title character in the 1992 horror classic Candyman and its sequels. His notable roles also include appearances in The Crow, The Rock, and the remake of Night of the Living Dead.

Beyond film, Todd performed on and off Broadway and was featured in numerous TV shows, including Law & Order, The X-Files, Smallville, Stargate SG-1, Psych, 24, and Charmed. His powerful voice made him a prominent figure in video games as well, lending his talents to titles like Half-Life 2, Dota 2, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, where he voiced Venom, a role that received critical praise. Todd’s contribution to film, television, and video games has spanned over four decades, with his work in Candyman bringing him significant recognition.
